Volume 2 of The Techniques of Modern Structural Geology has been written to complement Volume 1 so that the two books can forro a basis for a two-semester university teaching programme in structural geology. The organization and format of Volume 2 are more or less on the same lines as those of Volume l. Many of the basic concepts of strain, compatibility and the significance of rock fabrics set out in Volume 1 are extended so asto interlink with the wider geometrical and mechanical aspects of folding and fracturing processes seen in naturally deformed rocks. Each Session has been prepared to forro the basis for discussion of sorne well-defined aspect of rock structure.
Each begins with an introductory part setting out the groundwork of the topic and the reader is then confronted with questions of a practica! nature which require constructive thought to find a solution. All these questions are based on real examples, mathematical principies of deformation geometry, or the results of actual laboratory experiments. The questions are then followed by an “answers and comments” section in which geometrical, numerical or mathematical aspects are resolved and a wide-ranging discussion of specific phenomena arising in the topic
are presented.
For the student to be able to advance to the following Session he should have studied all the basic questions and the relevant commentaries. For those students who have more time orare ata higher level of experience, a series of “starred” questions will provide a deepening of their understanding. From the way the book is constructed, we do not expect a student to systematically read it from cover to cover.
