  • Title: Seismic Attributes for Prospect Identification and Reservoir Characterization
  • Author: Satinder Chopra and Kurt J. Marfurt
  • Publisher: Library of Congress Cataloging-in-Publication Data
  • Pages: 473

This work began while Satinder Chopra worked for Coherence Technology Company (CTC), which later became part of Core Laboratories. Chopra is particularly indebted to Vasudhaven Sudhakar (Sudha), who first introduced him to coherence-cube technology. Sudhakar’s belief in Chopra’s abilities sustained him in this work, wherein the intriguing and fascinating aspects of an emerging technology are revealed.

Chopra also is indebted to his former CTC/Core Laboratories colleagues Bob Stevens, Laura Evins, and Vladimir Alexeev, who were always willing to help. Thane McKay and Rob Howey have been particularly encouraging and supportive of this writing effort and are gratefully acknowledged. Several examples included in the text have been borrowed from the work of Chopra’s other former colleagues, which he and Kurt J. Marfurt gratefully acknowledge.

Chopra thanks his parents, who nurtured in him a thirst for knowledge which continues. He thanks the love of his life, his wife, Amrita, for her love, encouragement, and personal sacrifice, without which he would not have been able to accomplish this work. Special thanks go to his two children. A lot of precious time, which was rightfully theirs, was spent in the writing of this book, he says.

Marfurt, who says his strength is in recognizing if not initiating good ideas, joined this book project after Chopra produced a first draft. Marfurt is particularly indebted to his students and colleagues at Allied Geophysical Labs, University of Houston, who helped to write, debug, calibrate, proofread and, of course, reject many of the concepts that became part of this book.

Specifically, he wishes to recognize the contributions of Charlotte Sullivan, Chuck Blumentritt, and Peter Bartok, who kept him honest by grounding him in geology, and Saleh Al-Dossary, Jianlei Liu, Hao Guo, Gabriel Perez, and Cory Hoelting, who helped with algorithm development. Many of the examples come from thesis work by UH students, including Yomi Oyodele, Claudio d’Agosto, Prasad Jyosula, Ivana Lazarevic, Yves Simon, Marija Djordveic, and Joel Famini.
